Growing pains – a poem

Growing pains – a poem

My giggling, dancing, happy girl

Is slowly starting to unfurl

One minute she is playing fine

Then comes a whimper and a whine

Followed swiftly by a scream

That could echo through a dead man’s dream

And suddenly she’s lost the plot

Thrashing with everything she’s got

Howling as she turns bright red

While grabbing wildly at her head

Arching back with all her mite

Giving poor old mum a fright

Grab the Calpol and the gel

Throw in some warm milk as well

But nothing seems to dull the pain

My baby may have gone insane

I’m helpless, don’t know what to do

This agony is so brand new

A hug is deftly fought away

But by herself she will not lay

She looks right up into my eyes

And to my absolute surprise

She holds out both her little hands

And through her pain my girl demands

“Maaaamaaaaa”, wild and scared and slow

She cries for me so that I’ll know

I’m not to dare to leave her side

Of course my dear I will abide

For you’ve never called to me before

But I know exactly what I saw

So I lay beside her as she moans

And love her to my very bones

Until the screams begin to fade

Her scarlet cheeks a lighter shade

A tear-stained face betrays a smile

I know that we have passed the trial

She offers up a sticky toy

Which brings to me no end of joy

We’re done, it’s over, time to play

Happy for another day

But why did she just scream through lunch?

I reckon I have got a hunch

I touch her gums, though it’s uncouth

And oh my word, a jagged tooth!

(PS. true story – we produced a tooth in 30 painful minutes!)

Oh bless her!! Baby Lighty was a bit like this in that he had no teeth until his first birthday, and then got all of them practically in the space of six months!! Teeth are weird things!! Thanks so much for linking up to #DreamTeam!
